Technology
Introduction
Technology is a relatively young subject at The Pilgrim School, helping to nuture students creativity as well as looking at their Science and Maths skills.
Technology at Pilgrim is a little different to what pupils may have experienced before. Each term has a theme and links to that theme. We look at a design project, inspired by the James Dyson Foundation projects, alongside food technology which focuses on recipes that are relevant for that term.
During the last term of each academic year we look at a Crest Award. This is a student led project where we work together to develop a solution to a problem or carry out an investigation. Popular projects from previous years include finding out what makes a bathbomb fizz and making bottle rockets on a budget.
We learn what makes a healthy diet as well as gaining valuable cooking skills that will help us outside of the classroom and the health and safety that goes along with this.
AS a subject, Technology helps us nurture Sisu with looking over design cycles and the iterative process that comes with a technical subject and learning from each variation. There are also plenty of oppurtunites to show Eunoia in how we tackle the problems and the solutions we come up with.
Goal
Our goal is to help students develop problem solving and critical thinking skills while harnessing their creativity. These skills have lots of cross overs to other subjects, especially Maths and the Sciences.
Example Schema
Pathways
Currently technology is only offered to our KS3 pupils but the skills we develop in the subject lend themselves nicely to pursuing creative subjects and the Sciences at GCSE and beyond.
Technology has the potential to spark a desire to pursue a career in engineering or the rapidly developing world of modern technology.
Agency
The rapidly evolving world of modern technology means there are almost countless career options with some not even existing at this current moment in time.
A list of careers in technology can be found here but this list is not exhaustive.
