Supporting Children’s Literacy: Start with Reading Together

One of the most powerful things parents can do to support their child’s literacy development is surprisingly simple: read with them — and encourage them to read independently. Reading together not only strengthens language skills, but also builds confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong connection with learning.

Many parents feel pressure to guide their children toward traditional books or lengthy novels, but the truth is that all reading counts. Literacy grows through engagement and enjoyment, not just through classic literature. If a child is interested in comics, magazines, instruction manuals, graphic novels, football programmes, recipes, or even game guides, they are still developing essential reading skills.

When children read materials they genuinely enjoy, they are more motivated to practise. This motivation helps improve vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency naturally over time. The goal is not perfection or difficulty level — it is consistency and positive experiences with reading.

Reading together also creates valuable opportunities for conversation. Asking questions about what they’ve read, discussing favourite parts, or simply sharing stories strengthens understanding and makes reading feel meaningful rather than like a task.

Encouraging children to choose what they read empowers them to see themselves as readers. Whether they read for five minutes or fifty, whether it’s a novel or a comic strip, every moment spent reading contributes to their literacy journey.

In short, the most effective support parents can offer is simple: make reading a shared, enjoyable part of everyday life — and celebrate every kind of reading.
