Maths Department

Steve L - Head of Department

On completion of my Biology degree, I left the University in Manchester to move back to Lincolnshire. Jobs in the field of Biology were hard to come by and after doing various jobs, which included factory hand, shop worker and greens keeper I found an agency job as a Science Technician. This took me away to Hull, Cambridge, Suffolk, Norfolk and London where I worked in various settings. These included the School of Tropical medicine in London and Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge. I eventually settled in London for 10 years where I stayed at University College London analysing DNA and conducting scientific trials.

After this period, I felt that a change was due so finally underwent my teacher training at Goldsmiths University before gaining employment in North London. London Teaching was challenging and varied but for family reasons I eventually moved back to Lincolnshire and looked forward to the challenges there. I was lucky enough to have a job interview with The Pilgrim School and immediately felt that the ethos and outlook of the School were what I was looking for. I wanted to support these young people. I also found a community of staff who felt the same. After 11 years, the work is still challenging, fun and varied. I am proud to be a member of The Pilgrim community.

My journey at The Pilgrim School has taken me from Teaching Assistant to Teacher, SENDCo, and now a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Throughout this time, I have always kept pupils’ individual needs at the heart of my work. After completing my degree in Psychology at the University of York, I qualified as a teacher and now teach both Maths and Psychology—two subjects I have enjoyed since first being introduced to them.

In 2022, I completed my NASENDCo qualification and then became the school’s SENDCo, a role that allows me to support pupils and their families in accessing the right support, at the right place, at the right time. This work has strengthened my passion for inclusive education and my commitment to ensuring every pupil has the chance to thrive, both academically and personally.

Working at The Pilgrim School is incredibly rewarding. It gives me the opportunity to help pupils learn and grow in all areas of life, while being part of a supportive and dedicated team who always put pupils first. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, I am also committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for both pupils and staff, ensuring everyone can succeed.

I look forward to continuing to serve our school community in the years ahead.

I joined Pilgrim in 2015 and completed my teacher training to become a teacher of Maths.

Currently, I work part-time teaching Maths, Vocational Studies and Health and Social Care. I work across two bases currently - Lincoln and Baumber, teaching KS4 students.

I have recently joined Pilgrim and have loved every minute of it. I have worked in education since 2014, across both mainstream and SEND provisions, mainly in classroom support – albeit under many different job titles! I had always said that, as much as I loved working in schools, I never wanted to become a teacher. Well... here we are, 10 or so years later, and I’m now a fully qualified Maths teacher! The irony has not been lost on me.

As much as I have always enjoyed Maths, it soon became apparent that not everyone shared this passion. Maths is often viewed as something people simply ‘can’t do’, or as a subject they dislike, and this is something I aim to change. I hope that my work here at Pilgrim can make Maths more accessible and (at least somewhat!) enjoyable. I want to support pupils not just to ‘do’ Maths, but to become more adaptable, develop their problem-solving skills and learn to persevere when faced with a challenge. For me, teaching Maths isn’t just about preparing pupils for exams; it’s about preparing young people for greater independence, giving them skills they can use beyond the classroom and removing as many barriers as possible along the way.

I have been lucky enough to work with many different young people over the years, helping them to achieve not only academically, but also towards their own individual goals and to access the education they deserve. This is why I feel privileged to work at a school like Pilgrim, knowing that I am part of a team that works together to support both pupils and staff – helping them not only to have hope, but to succeed in all aspects of life
