Therapeutic Support

In addition to pastoral support provided by the PSWS team and as part of The Pilgrim School’s commitment to a holistic approach, we are proud to offer staff and pupils access to an in-house therapeutic service. This dedicated service is available for individuals on roll or who work at The Pilgrim School and who are not currently in receipt of any other therapeutic intervention.

Counselling offers a safe, confidential space for individuals to talk about and explore feelings and concerns. Counsellors listen and help individuals to understand themselves better and to make positive changes to their life.

We believe that by offering access to counselling in a safe and familiar environment, we provide an additional layer of support to help clients to grow and develop as individuals. By normalising and simplifying access to counselling, we hope to communicate a value of acceptance towards self-care and prioritising mental health. With counselling available in school, we can work with individuals from the earliest opportunity and for as long as is needed. The term-time only service offers free, weekly, 60-minute appointments, in the manner that is most accessible for the client (e.g. face-to-face, telephone, video-call). Staff and pupils who wish to access the service are able to self-refer or complete a referral form with the support of the pastoral team in school. Referral forms can be found below.

The Pilgrim School Counselling Service is set-up and run by Vicki Steadman, a qualified, humanistic-integrative counsellor and BACP registered member with over 10 years of experience of working in The Pilgrim School.

Recently, The Pilgrim School Counselling Service has been supplemented by offering student art and drama therapists a placement opportunity in school. Working in partnership with the University of Derby and Sheffield Hallam University, we are able to offer a student placement to first- and second-year therapists studying at Masters level.

These creative therapies are available to a small number of pupils attending one of the three school bases and offers an opportunity to explore and express emotions creatively in a confidential setting. The provision of creative therapies enables us to offer alternative therapeutic interventions and element of choice to pupils seeking support.

It is important to note that due to geographical logistics, it is not possible to guarantee access to art or drama therapy.
